DSG Gearbox Repair & Service - VW, Audi, SEAT & Skoda
Juddering? Jerky shifts? Flashing gear light or limp mode? We diagnose and repair every DSG problem - DQ200, DQ250, DQ380 and DQ500.
What is a DSG Gearbox?
A DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) is Volkswagen Group's dual-clutch automatic, also badged S tronic on Audi. Two clutches pre-select the next gear so changes are almost instant - brilliant when it's working, but it's a complex unit with a hydraulic-electronic "mechatronic" brain that needs the right care.
The good news: most DSG problems are fixable, and many are preventable with the right oil service at the right interval. You don't need a main dealer to do it properly.
Common DSG Problems & Symptoms
Get it checked if you notice:
- Juddering or shuddering as you pull away
- Jerky, hesitant or delayed gear changes
- A flashing gear / PRND indicator on the dash
- The car dropping into limp mode (won't rev or shift)
- Loss of drive or slipping under acceleration
- Whining, knocking or rattling from the gearbox
Caught early, most of these are a service or repair - left too long, they can turn into a full clutch or mechatronic replacement.
DSG Models We Work On
We service and repair every common VAG dual-clutch box - here's what's likely under your car:
Fitted to smaller petrols (1.2/1.4 TSI). Prone to mechatronic faults - juddering and limp mode are the classic warning signs.
The workhorse on Golf, Passat and A3 (2.0 TSI / TDI). Thrives on a regular oil & filter service - skip it and the clutch pack suffers.
Newer Golf, Tiguan and Octavia. Smooth when healthy, but jerky shifts and flaring point to oil or mechatronic wear.
High-torque box used on Transporter vans and bigger Audi/VW engines. Heavy use means oil services matter even more.
Why the DSG Oil & Filter Service Matters
DSG fluid carries debris and keeps the clutches and mechatronic hydraulics working smoothly. As it degrades, you get exactly the juddering and harsh shifts owners complain about - and worn fluid is behind a large share of premature DSG failures.
- Wet-clutch boxes (DQ250/380/500): oil & filter service around every 40,000 miles
- Dry-clutch DQ200: still benefits from fresh fluid despite the "sealed" label
A service is far cheaper than a clutch pack or mechatronic unit - it's the single best thing you can do to protect a DSG.

Mechatronic Unit Problems
The mechatronic unit is the DSG's control centre - a combined valve body and control module that manages clutch pressure and gear selection. It's the most common failure point, especially on the DQ200, and the usual cause of limp mode and a flashing gear light.
Many mechatronic faults can be repaired rather than replaced - we test thoroughly and only fit what's genuinely needed.
Mobile or Workshop?
Diagnostics and many DSG oil services can be done at your home or work. For mechatronic and clutch-pack work we collect your vehicle and complete it properly in the workshop with the right tools and a clean environment.

What Our Customers Say
I had an awful grinding noise start on my Vauxhall Antara but could not identify exactly where it was coming from. I took the car to several garages and a transmission specialist but none of them could give me an answer. I looked on line and called your local mechanic and spoke to Elliot in Stourbridge. He told me to take the car over and he would take a look. We went out for a test drive and Elliot identified the problem almost immediately. Elliot called me later the same day with prices for replacement parts fitted, both new and used. I agreed to have new parts and Elliot took the car in immediately. He kept me informed of progress as a big transmission job and completed the work in time for my holiday. Car is now like new. This mechanic is very professional, friendly and extremely knowledgeable and competitive. Top marks and many thanks Elliot, you will be highly recommended 👍👍👍

I found this mechanic randomly when booking my car in for a service, and I'm really glad I did. They were honest, professional, and straightforward throughout the whole process. They explained everything clearly, didn't try to upsell unnecessary work, and the pricing was fair. The service was completed on time, and my car felt great afterwards. It's refreshing to come across a mechanic that feels trustworthy and genuinely cares about doing a good job. I'd definitely use them again and would happily recommend them to others.

Common Questions
How often should a DSG gearbox be serviced?
Wet-clutch boxes (DQ250, DQ380, DQ500) should have an oil and filter service roughly every 40,000 miles. Even the "sealed for life" dry-clutch DQ200 benefits from fresh fluid. We confirm the right interval for your exact model when you book.
What does a flashing gear indicator mean?
A flashing gear or PRND light usually means the gearbox has detected a fault and may drop into limp mode to protect itself. Avoid driving it hard and book a diagnostic - it is commonly a mechatronic or clutch-related issue we can pinpoint quickly.
Is juddering on pull-away serious?
Juddering or shuddering as you set off is one of the most common DSG warning signs, usually pointing to clutch pack or mechatronic wear. Catching it early often means a service or repair rather than a full clutch replacement.
Can you repair the mechatronic unit or does it have to be replaced?
Many mechatronic faults - sticking solenoids, pressure-control problems and sensor issues - can be repaired rather than replacing the whole unit. We diagnose first and only fit what is genuinely needed, then explain the options and cost before any work starts.
Which makes and models do you cover?
All VAG vehicles with DSG or S tronic transmissions: Volkswagen, Audi (S tronic), SEAT and Skoda, plus many Ford Powershift dual-clutch boxes. From a Polo to a Transporter, we have it covered.
Do I have to go to a main dealer for DSG work?
No. We use the correct DSG oils, filters and dealer-level diagnostics at a fraction of main-dealer prices, and back the work with a 12-month parts and labour warranty.
