The test fee is capped. The repairs are where trust matters.

Here's something most garages won't tell you. The MOT test fee is capped by the government. For a normal car it's £54.85 and nobody is allowed to charge you more than that.

So the test itself isn't where anyone makes money. The repairs are. Which is exactly why it matters who's telling you what needs doing.

Keith spent forty years as a Vauxhall main-dealer technician and is a fully qualified MOT assessor. He knows what examiners look for, because he's been the examiner. He also knows the difference between something that genuinely must be fixed and something that can wait until next payday, and he'll tell you which is which.

Around a third of MOT failures are things you could have spotted at home in ten minutes. We'd rather you passed first time.

Before it goes anywhere near the tester, we look at bulbs, wipers, screenwash, tyres and number plates. Those are the silly fails, and we'd rather fix a bulb for the price of a bulb than have you pay for a failed test.

At a DVSA-approved centre, to DVSA standards. The result goes straight onto the government database, so your certificate exists the moment it passes.

Know before the test, not after it

We go through the same items the official test covers. Tyres, brakes, lights, wipers, suspension, emissions, the lot. Anything that would fail, we tell you, and we can usually fix it there and then.

Twenty-five pounds to avoid a failed test, a re-test, and the day of stress in between. It's the thing we recommend most often to anyone whose car has done a hard year.

What happens if it fails

First, don't panic. A fail is a list, not a disaster, and quite a lot of what turns up is cheap. You get an itemised quote with parts and labour broken out per item, and an honest split between what must be fixed to pass and what is only an advisory.

Most common failures can be sorted the same day. Because we already have the car, there's no second trip for you.

What an MOT really costs and what a fail means

The re-test window

If the car stays at the test centre for repair and is re-tested within ten working days, the partial re-test is free.

If it comes away, a next-working-day partial re-test is free for certain listed items. Returning within ten working days can carry a partial re-test fee. Leave it longer and you're paying for a full test again.

We handle that timing for you, which is most of the value of us doing it rather than you.

No, we can't do the MOT on your driveway

And neither can anybody else, whatever they tell you.

The official MOT has to be carried out at a DVSA-approved test centre, on approved equipment, by an approved tester. There is no mobile version of it. Anyone offering to MOT your car at your house is not offering you an MOT.

What we do instead is take the travelling out of it. We collect, we test, we repair, we return. The bit that has to happen at a test centre happens at a test centre, and none of it happens in your day.

Repairs after a fail

Small stuff gets done there and then. Bulbs, wipers, that sort of thing.

Anything bigger, brakes, suspension or exhaust work, comes back to our workshop in Dudley where there are ramps and time to do it properly. Then it goes back for the re-test.

When to book

You can have the test done up to a month minus a day before your current certificate expires, and keep the same renewal date. You lose nothing by going early.

Do that, and if something fails you've got weeks to sort it rather than driving around untested. There's no grace period after expiry. From midnight on the day after the expiry date the car shouldn't be on the road, and ANPR cameras pick it up quickly.

Warning lights fail MOTs

An illuminated engine management, ABS, airbag, brake system, stability control, power steering or tyre pressure light is a fail if it's showing an active fault when the car goes in.

How much is an MOT?

Our MOT testing starts from £40, including the test and the certificate. The government caps the MOT fee for a standard car at £54.85, so nobody can legally charge you more than that. If repairs are needed you get an itemised quote first, and we handle the re-test timing to keep any fee as low as the rules allow.

Can you do the MOT at my house?

No, and nor can anyone else. The official MOT must be carried out at a DVSA-approved test centre by an approved tester. What we do instead is collect your car, take it for the test, carry out any repairs and return it, so you don't have to go anywhere.

How long does an MOT take?

The test itself usually takes between forty-five minutes and an hour. With collection, testing and return, most customers are without their car for around half a day. If something fails and we're repairing it, we'll tell you the timings before we start.

What is the pre-MOT check and what does it cost?

A pre-MOT check is £25 and covers the same items as the official test: tyres, brakes, lights, wipers, suspension and emissions. If we find something that would fail, we can usually fix it there and then, which saves you a failed test and the hassle of a re-test.

Only to a pre-booked MOT test, or to a garage for repairs needed to pass, and only if the car is roadworthy. There is no grace period. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurer may treat the policy as invalid.

Will a warning light fail my MOT?

Yes. An illuminated engine management, ABS, airbag, brake system, stability control, power steering or tyre pressure light will fail the test if it shows an active fault. Get any dashboard light diagnosed before you book.

How early can I get my MOT done?
