Watch: a VW Arteon DSG stuck in 2nd and 5th, fixed without a new gearbox

The owner noticed the gearbox holding 2nd and 5th. Diagnostics found failed pressure solenoids in the mechatronic unit, which was reconditioned rather than replaced.

So this week we had in this VW Arteon, 2018 plate, 2-liter TDI engine.

The customer had noted that it was getting stuck in 2nd and 5th gear.

Um, after the diagnostics, we found that the, the mechatronic unit, the pressure solenoids had failed in the, in the actual mechatronic unit itself.

So this was fully reconditioned, repaired, um, put it back in the box, did the oils.

Now it’s vital on these that when you refit the mechatronic unit, you have to warm the car up properly to get the correct level of oil in the gearbox, and you have to do the basic adaptions to get all the gears synchronised and working properly again.

Customer collected, and that was it.

What this job tells you

Stuck in gear is a symptom, not a diagnosis

A DSG holding a gear can come from the clutch pack, a sensor, the hydraulics or the mechatronic unit, and from the driver’s seat they all feel much the same. This Arteon went on diagnostics before anything was ordered, and the fault traced to the pressure solenoids inside the mechatronic unit. That is a very different bill from the replacement gearbox that symptom often gets quoted for over the phone.

The mechatronic unit was repaired, not replaced

The mechatronic unit is the gearbox’s control centre: a valve body and control module that manages oil pressure to the clutches and gear actuators. When the solenoids inside it fail, the box cannot route pressure where it needs to go. Here the unit came out, was fully reconditioned and repaired, and went back into the same gearbox with fresh oil. No new mechatronic unit and no new gearbox.

The refit is only half the job

Elliot’s point about these boxes is the bit that gets missed. After a mechatronic unit is refitted the car has to be warmed up properly so the gearbox oil level can be set at the correct temperature, and the basic adaptions have to be run so every gear is synchronised and working properly again. Skip either and a sound repair will still shift badly.
