We recover cars for this almost every week. Usually a Fiesta or a Corsa, usually somebody who has serviced it properly, and usually the same story: the oil light flickered on a roundabout, they got it home, and now the engine won't turn over.
Nobody had told them their car has a timing belt that lives inside the engine, bathed in hot oil, and that it has a replacement date.
If you drive a Ford Fiesta, Focus or EcoSport, a Vauxhall Corsa or Mokka, a Peugeot 208 or 2008, a Citroen C3, or a Transit, this one is worth ten minutes of your time. Here's what a wet belt actually is, why it fails, and what to do about it before it becomes a scrapped car.
What a wet belt actually is
A normal cambelt sits on the outside of the engine behind a plastic cover, dry, and gets changed every five years or so. A timing chain sits inside the engine in the oil and usually lasts the life of the car.
A wet belt is the awkward middle child. It's a rubber toothed belt, like a cambelt, but it runs inside the engine submerged in engine oil.
Manufacturers went this way for good reasons on paper. A belt running in oil is quieter than a chain, lighter, has less friction, and squeezes out a bit more fuel economy and a few grams of CO2. In the emissions-target years of the 2010s, a few grams mattered a lot.
The problem is what nobody properly accounted for: rubber sitting in hot oil for a decade doesn't behave like rubber sitting in fresh air.
Why they fail (and it isn't wear)
This is the bit that catches people out. A wet belt usually doesn't fail because it's worn out mechanically. It fails chemically.
As engine oil ages it becomes more acidic. Add in fuel getting past the piston rings on short journeys, add heat cycles, add an oil that isn't quite the right spec, and the outer surface of the belt starts to soften and break down. It doesn't crack like an old cambelt. It sheds. It's the same ageing oil we talk about in when to change your engine oil, just doing a nastier kind of damage here.
Tiny particles of rubber come off the belt and go straight into your oil, because the belt is already sitting in your oil. There's no filter between the belt and the sump. Those particles circulate, settle, and gradually build up on the oil pump pickup strainer at the bottom of the engine.
That mesh strainer is the last thing between the sump and your oil pump. Clog it, and oil pressure drops. Drop oil pressure, and the bearings, the camshafts and the turbo all start running dry.
That's the failure. Not a snapped belt and bent valves. Oil starvation, from rubber your own timing belt shed into your own oil. By the time the oil light comes on, the damage is usually already done.
Short-journey cars suffer worst. If your car does school run, shops, back home, and never gets properly hot, the oil degrades faster and the fuel dilution is worse. Around here that describes most people's driving.
Which engines have one
The three you'll see most on the roads around Dudley, Halesowen and Stourbridge:
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (2012 onwards). Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, Mondeo, Transit Courier and Transit Connect. The original three-cylinder version has a full wet timing belt.
Stellantis 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol. This engine is in a huge number of cars: Vauxhall Corsa, Mokka, Crossland and Grandland, Peugeot 208, 2008, 308 and 3008, Citroen C3, C4 and Berlingo, and DS models. The belt-driven versions carry engine codes starting EB2.
Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel. Transit, Transit Custom and Tourneo. Ford cut the service interval on this one specifically because of oil dilution during DPF regeneration.
The bit almost every other article gets wrong
Ford revised the 1.0 EcoBoost around 2018 to 2019. The newer version, sometimes called the Dragon engine, drives the camshafts with a timing chain instead of a belt. You'll find it in the Puma, later Fiestas and later Focuses. You can often spot it because the turbo sits at the back of the engine rather than the front.
So people are told "you've got a chain, you're fine" and stop worrying.
Not quite. On most of those revised engines the oil pump is still driven by a wet belt. It's a better belt and a better tensioner than the original, and it's a smaller and cheaper job than a full timing belt, but it's still a rubber belt sitting in your oil with a service life. It still sheds. It still needs doing.
Same goes for the newer Stellantis 1.2 hybrids from 2023 onwards, which moved to a chain. Good news if you're buying new. Doesn't help the hundreds of thousands of belt-driven ones already on the road.

What the actual interval is
Here's where it gets messy, and why so many people have been caught out.
The 1.0 EcoBoost belt was originally sold as a lifetime component. Then it became 15 years or 150,000 miles. Then 10 years or 150,000. Ford's current guidance for many variants is 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. In the US, regulators are still investigating the engine and Ford has cut the figure again there and started reimbursing owners for related engine repairs.
For the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel in Transits, Ford dropped it to 6 years or 100,000 miles, down from 10 years or 150,000, citing oil dilution.
Stellantis cut the PureTech interval hard too, to around 6 years or 62,000 miles on the belt-driven engines, and the oil specification is not optional. It has to be the correct PSA-spec oil, changed annually.
Two things to take from that. First, every one of these intervals has been revised downwards, in some cases more than once, which tells you the original numbers were optimistic. Second, the years matter more than the miles. We see belts that have shed badly on cars with 45,000 miles on them, because the car is eleven years old and has spent most of its life doing three-mile trips. Time and oil quality do the damage, not distance.
Our honest rule of thumb: get it inspected at eight years, replace it at ten, regardless of what the mileage says. On a PureTech, bring that forward.
Warning signs to listen for
- ▸A whine or whirr from the front of the engine, usually worse under load
- ▸The oil light flickering, especially on roundabouts, braking or cornering
- ▸Low oil pressure warnings, or a "STOP" or anti-pollution message
- ▸Rough running, misfires or a rattle on cold start
- ▸Oil consumption that's crept up without an obvious leak
- ▸Black rubbery debris on the oil filler cap or dipstick, or specks in the oil when it's drained
If you get an oil pressure warning on one of these engines, stop and call somebody. Don't drive it home. Ten minutes of driving on low oil pressure is the difference between a belt job and an engine.
What a proper wet belt replacement involves
This matters, because it's where the cheap quotes come from. Swapping just the belt is not the job. If somebody quotes you a suspiciously low price, this is usually what they've left out.
Done properly it means:
1. Timing cover off, and the old belt inspected to see how much material it has already lost 2. Sump off, and the oil pump pickup strainer checked and cleaned or replaced. This is the step that gets skipped, and it's the step that saves the engine 3. Belt, tensioner and idlers replaced with genuine or OEM parts, never pattern parts 4. Oil pump drive belt done at the same time where fitted 5. Camshafts and crankshaft re-timed with proper locking tools 6. Fresh oil and a new filter, because the old oil is full of belt 7. Run up, oil pressure checked, diagnostic scan and a road test
Skip the sump and the pickup, and the residual rubber already in the engine will clog the new strainer within a few thousand miles. We've seen cars come to us having had a belt done elsewhere twelve months earlier, and lost the engine anyway. It's why our timing belt replacement job always includes the sump and the strainer, not just the belt.
What it costs
At an independent garage in 2026 you're generally looking at somewhere in the region of:
- ▸1.2 PureTech: £450 to £850
- ▸Ford 1.0 EcoBoost: £650 to £1,200
- ▸2.0 EcoBlue Transit: £800 to £1,500
Main dealers charge more. Prices vary with the engine, the model and what we find when the sump comes off, so ring us for a proper quote on your car rather than treating those as gospel.
Set that against a replacement engine, which starts around £2,500 fitted for a small petrol and climbs quickly from there, plus recovery, plus a couple of weeks without a car. On a ten-year-old Fiesta, an engine failure usually writes the car off in practical terms.
It isn't a cheap job. We're not going to pretend otherwise. But it's the cheapest version of this problem you will ever be offered.
If you've already paid for one
Worth knowing, and most owners don't:
Stellantis runs a compensation portal for owners of 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines who paid out for premature timing belt failure or excessive oil consumption on work carried out between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2024. They've also extended the warranty on earlier PureTech engines to cover parts and labour for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles. There are conditions, including that the servicing followed the manufacturer's schedule and that the diagnosis and repair went through the authorised network, so it won't cover everybody. Around 60% of claims are reported to succeed. If you've got the invoices, it costs you nothing to try.
Ford owners: the US regulator's investigation into the 1.0 EcoBoost is still open and Ford has started reimbursing affected owners over there. Nothing equivalent has been confirmed for UK cars, but if you've had an engine failure on one, it's worth putting it to Ford UK in writing and keeping every invoice.
Buying a used car with one of these engines
A wet belt car isn't a car to avoid. It's a car to buy with evidence.
If you're looking at a Fiesta, Corsa, 208 or C3 of the right age, ask one question: has the wet belt been done, and can I see the invoice? Not the service book stamp. The invoice, showing the sump came off.
If it hasn't been done and the car is past six years old on a PureTech or eight on an EcoBoost, that's not a dealbreaker. It's £600 or so off the asking price, because you're going to be paying for it shortly.
If you want a second opinion before you hand over the money, that's exactly what a pre-purchase inspection is for. We'd rather spend an hour saving you from a bad car than spend a week rebuilding it afterwards.
The short version
If your car has a wet belt and it's approaching eight to ten years old, get it looked at. If it's a PureTech, get it looked at sooner. If your oil light has ever flickered, get it looked at this week.
