Watch: a Mini Cooper with no clutch pedal, even after a new master and slave

The clutch master and slave had already been changed. With the gearbox out, Elliot found the clutch fork had snapped, and there was a lot of play in the dual mass flywheel too.

Okay, so this was a Mini Cooper 1.6 diesel that we had in.

The customer from Kingswinford had, um, already changed the, the clutch master and the clutch slave because they reported that they couldn’t get a clutch pedal.

So when we stripped the gearbox out, we found that the clutch fork had actually snapped.

So this was preventing any movement on the clutch pedal.

This is quite common on these engines.

Um, we also noticed a lot of play in the dual mass flywheel, so changed the clutch fork, dual mass flywheel, clutch kit, bled the system up, and that was the next one ready to go.

What this job tells you

No pedal does not always mean the hydraulics

A clutch pedal that does nothing normally points to the hydraulics first, which makes the master and slave the obvious parts to change. On this Mini they had already been changed and there was still no pedal. The fault was further along: the clutch fork had snapped, and it came to light once the gearbox was stripped out.

Already changed parts? Tell us what went on

If new parts have gone on and the fault is still there, tell us what was changed. It narrows down where to look and saves going over the same ground. Elliot says a snapped clutch fork is quite common on these engines, so it is worth bearing in mind on a Mini Cooper 1.6 diesel with no pedal.

With the gearbox out, check the flywheel too

Getting to the fork means taking the gearbox out, and that opens up the clutch and flywheel as well. Here there was a lot of play in the dual mass flywheel, so the fork, the flywheel and a clutch kit all went on together. Doing them at once means the gearbox does not have to come back out for a flywheel that was already worn.
