So this, uh, this car we had in the garage today was a Hyundai i10, just in for a routine service, MOT, and the customer opted for a brake fluid change as well.
Car was extremely clean.
I don’t think she, uh, she does a lot of miles in this one, but yeah, job took about an hour and a half, 2 hours, and then we dropped it back to her.
This i10 does very few miles, and it would be easy to assume the brake fluid can wait. It cannot. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air as it ages, and that moisture boils at a far lower temperature than the fluid itself. Under heavy braking that is what leaves the pedal feeling soft. Most manufacturers put the change at every two years, however few miles the car has done.
No fault reported and nothing to chase. The car came in for the maintenance it was due, the owner added the brake fluid change, and it went back the same day. A clean, low-mileage car looked after like this stays cheap to run. The expensive version is the one where the fluid is left until the pedal changes.
The service, the MOT and the brake fluid change all happened in the same hour-and-a-half to two-hour visit, because the car was already on the ramp. If your car is coming in for a service anyway, that is the cheapest time to have the fluid tested and changed. We quote it after the check, and nothing is done until you say yes.
