Watch: a Ford Focus fault code for a sensor that lives inside another part

The code named the air intake temperature sensor. On the 1.8 TDCi that sensor is built into the air mass meter, so the meter was swapped and the codes cleared the same morning.

Nice little easy job we had in this morning.

Uh, Ford Focus 64 plate, 1.8 TDCi.

Trouble code is coming up with the air intake temperature sensor.

It’s actually part of the mass airflow sensor on these, so you have to take out the, the air filter housing, remove the air mass meter from the, the air mass housing, and then just swap them over.

Nice easy job.

Clear the trouble codes, then that one was all done.

What this job tells you

The code names a sensor, not the part to buy

A fault code tells you which reading has gone wrong. It does not tell you what that sensor is fitted to. On the Focus 1.8 TDCi the air intake temperature sensor is built into the air mass meter, so there is no separate sensor to order. Anyone who reads the code and buys a standalone temperature sensor has spent money on a part that will not fit.

Knowing the car is what keeps it quick

Once you know where the sensor lives, the job is straightforward: the air filter housing comes out, the air mass meter comes out of its housing, the new one goes in, and the codes are cleared. This one was in and finished the same morning. The time and money go on working out what to replace, not on fitting it.

A stored code is worth sorting while it is small

The engine management uses the air readings to work out fuelling. And if a fault has the engine warning light on, the light cannot come on a second time for the next fault, so a new problem can slip by unnoticed. Getting a single sensor fault fixed and the codes cleared puts the warning system back to telling you something, and on this car it was a short job.

The diagnostics page explains what you actually get for the fee, why a code reader on its own is not a diagnosis, and what happens if we cannot find the fault.

Got a fault code and not sure what it means?

Send us the registration and the code, or just what the car is doing. We will tell you what the code points to on your car before anyone orders a part.
