Watch: an Audi A3 EGR code that led to the exhaust pressure control valve

It started with a trouble code for the EGR valve. After diagnostics, a code reset and a re-drive, the exhaust pressure control valve came up: a part that sits under the car, open to all the elements.

So this one was a, uh, 2018 plate Audi A3 1.6 TDI.

It’s coming up with a trouble code for the EGR valve, um, to start off with.

After doing a bit of diagnostics and resetting the codes and re-driving, it started to come up with an exhaust pressure control valve.

And these are pretty common on these, these Audis because they sit underneath the car on the exhaust.

They’re open to all the elements.

Uh, it basically controls the pressure through the exhaust and allows the engine to heat up quicker.

Sometimes you can get symptoms of erratic idling and various different things, but this year, this one, this one was a pretty interesting job, so got it sorted anyway.

Customer was happy.

What this job tells you

The first code is where a diagnosis starts

This Audi came in with a trouble code for the EGR valve. After some diagnostics the codes were reset and the car was re-driven, and that is when the exhaust pressure control valve came up. Reading the first code and stopping there would have missed what came next.

Why these valves are common on these Audis

Elliot puts it down to where they sit: underneath the car on the exhaust, open to all the elements. In the video the old valve is on the bench next to the new one, so you can see the difference.

What the valve does, and what you might notice

It controls the pressure through the exhaust and allows the engine to heat up quicker. Sometimes you can get symptoms such as erratic idling. If your car is idling oddly or has a warning light on, a proper scan will show what the engine is reporting before anyone orders a part.
