Summer Car Care - Get Your Car Holiday Ready
Heading off this summer? From £95, I'll get your car checked and holiday-ready before the getaway, so the only thing you're worrying about is where to stop for lunch.
Why Summer Preparation Matters
Most people think summer is the easy season for a car. It isn't. Heat is brutal on the bits that keep you moving, and summer is when we ask the most of our cars: long motorway runs to the coast, a boot full of holiday gear, sitting in bank holiday traffic with the air-con on full. The worst place to discover a problem is the hard shoulder of the M5 on a 28-degree afternoon, with the kids in the back and a three-hour wait for recovery.
A summer health check now could save you:
£150-£300
Average cost of a summer breakdown recovery and roadside repair
A ruined day out
Stuck on the verge instead of on the beach
Hours in the heat
Waiting for recovery with no shade
The holiday itself
A breakdown on the way to your getaway
Every July I get the same calls: air-con blowing warm on the hottest week of the year, or a car cooking itself in a traffic jam. Nearly all of it is avoidable with a check beforehand.
What Fails Most in Summer?
In my 15+ years as a mechanic across the Midlands, these are the problems I see most once the weather turns warm:
After months switched off over winter, air-con comes back weak, smelly, or not cold at all. Most systems lose their gas slowly and need a regas every two to three years.
Left too long, the compressor can fail, and that is a far bigger bill than a regas.
Here's the one that surprises people: heat kills batteries harder than cold does. High temperatures evaporate the fluid inside and accelerate corrosion. Winter usually gets the blame, but it's really just the moment a heat-damaged battery finally gives up. If yours is over three years old, summer is when the damage is being done. A test now beats a no-start in a holiday car park.
Stop-start traffic on a hot day is the hardest work an engine ever does. A tired hose, a weak coolant mix, or a struggling radiator that coped fine in spring will let go in a heatwave. An overheated engine can mean a cracked head or worse, which runs into thousands.
Hot tarmac plus a heavily loaded car plus motorway miles is how blowouts happen. Heat raises your pressures, so they need setting correctly for the load. And summer downpours arrive fast, so tread depth matters as much as it does in winter. Aim for 3 mm or more.

When Should I Book?
Now, before the getaway rush.
Once the schools break up in July, two things happen at once: everyone heads off on holiday, and I'm out on the motorway picking up the people who didn't get checked first. Book ahead and you stay in the first group.
Book your summer check now and you'll:
I'm already taking bookings ahead of the summer holidays. Don't wait for the first heatwave to find out your air-con's given up.
Common Summer Questions
Not always. If it's still blowing properly cold, leave it. If it's weak, slow, or smells musty, it's lost gas or needs a cleanse. Most systems need a regas every two to three years. I'll tell you honestly which camp you're in.
It's the opposite of what most people think. Heat does the real damage by evaporating the fluid inside and speeding up corrosion. Cold weather just exposes a battery that summer already weakened. If yours is over three years old, now's the time to test it.
Yes. Extra weight changes your tyre pressures, works the brakes and cooling system harder, and affects your loaded tread. Worth a quick check before a big towing trip, and I'll set everything up for the load.
Switch the engine off as soon as it's safe and don't keep driving, that's what does the expensive damage. Never open a hot cap. Let it cool, then call me. Overheating is almost always a sign of a coolant leak or a cooling fault worth finding properly.
Yes, and I'd rather be on your driveway than have you stuck on the hard shoulder. I come to your home or workplace so you don't have to sit around in it.
Probably not the full check, but before a long holiday drive I'd still recommend a quick tyre, coolant and air-con look (£25, 15 minutes). New cars overheat and lose air-con gas too.
